Speak Up Be Safe (SUBS)

Speak Up Be Safe is one of many programs provided by the Child Abuse Prevention Council. It is a research-based, developmentally appropriate program designed for 1st – 8th grade students that focuses on child abuse, sexual abuse, bullying, cyber-bullying, sexual harassment, and technology safety. The class is taught directly in the classroom by two highly-trained CAPC staff members who are also made available for further student support after the lessons. SUBS supports the idea that every child should know how to identify at least two trusted safe adults in their lives to approach should they face any of these issues. It has received generous praise by various teachers and administrators throughout our community.

Child Abuse can and has occurred all over our county, even in the more affluent communities. It does not segregate by income-level.

With the recent #metoo movement and our children having access to more technology all the time, we need this program now more than ever. If you’d like more information on SUBS (including access to the lessons at every grade level), please visit the CAPC website.

SUBS currently exists at all Moraga, San Ramon and Lafayette Schools. It is taught in a few West Contra Costa and Mt. Diablo district schools, and in Walnut Creek at the 5th grade level only. One of ACAPC’s goals is to help get the program into many more schools in our county. If you’d like to find out more about getting SUBS into your school’s district, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
